Charles Vannatter became the Building Official for the Town of Wytheville in 2015. A native of West Virginia, Charles began his fire service career in 1990 as a firefighter for the Verdunville Volunteer Fire Department in Logan, WV.
Charles received an Associate in Science in Criminal Justice and General Studies from Southern West Virginia Community and Technology Center. He graduated cum laude with a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice with minor in Corrections from West Virginia State College and a Masters degree in Justice Leadership from Marshall University Graduate College.
Charles has graduated from numerous public service academies including: National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland, West Virginia Natural Resource Police Academy, West Virginia Corrections Academy, and the Virginia Fire Marshal Academy. He has taken several courses from the Jack Proctor Academy in Virginia for Building Officials.
He is a certified NFPA & ICC Fire Inspector I & II; NAFI (National Certified Fire and Explosive Investigator); Certified Instructor for the following WMD AWR-160, LSU-Operational WMD Response for Law Enforcement & Law Enforcement Prevention & Deterrence of Terrorist Acts; WMD New Mexico Tech; RESA & WV Fire Service Extension; NRA Law Enforcement Firearms; Law Enforcement Officer Instructor through the Governor’s Committee on Crime Delinquency and Corrections. He serves on many professional committees and boards.
Prior to joining the Town of Wytheville, Charles was employed by the WV State Parole/Probation Office in Princeton and, most recently, as an Assistant State Fire Marshal for the Mercer County area.
